Hilton started his working life in an aircraft factory and, after serving in World War Two, briefly worked in a sewing factory while singing at clubs in the evenings. He was spotted by record-label manager Walter Ridley. Hilton made his singing debut in 1954 at the Dudley Hippodrome and almost immediately was offered his own BBC radio show.
