The Irish journalist who confessed to having forged the incriminating letter. On the first day, 21 February 1889, of Sir Charles Russell's cross-examination, Hall recorded Russell's injunction: ''Now Mr Pigott pull yourself together''. After his confession, Pigott fled to Madrid and committed suicide on being apprehended by the police in an hotel there.
