Began collecting books as an undergraduate at Brasenose College, Oxford. His interests, at first classical, widened, and he added many rare editions of early English drama and literature to his library. He attended continental book sales, purchasing single volumes, but sometimes whole libraries. His collection grew to such a size that it overran eight houses, both in England, and the Continent. He owned at least 150,000 volumes; probably more. It is estimated to have cost over £100,000, and after Heber's death his English collection alone... more
