Hunt painted Fanny's younger sister Edith in 1868 and realised that she was in love with him. Despite his own initial doubts, the opposition of the Waugh family and in defiance of English law, Hunt proposed to Edith in 1873 and they were married in Switzerland in 1875. The union was a success. Accompanied by his first son, Cyril, they lived in Jerusalem until 1878. Here Edith posed for the Virgin Mary in The Triumph of the Innocents (1876-87).
