Conservative Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990. Margaret Thatcher was the first woman to hold the office in Britain and was re-elected twice, in 1983 and 1987. Educated at Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School and Somerville College, Oxford, her first career was as a research chemist (1947-51).
