Trained in the law, Cohen was called to the Bar in 1913 and started practicing after World War I. He acquired a big practice in company law and became recognised in commercial circles as the leading expert in his subject. After the Second World War, Cohen was appointed a judge of the Chancery Division and was promoted to the Court of Appeal in 1946. He was made a life peer in 1951.
