Born near Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, the grandson of slaves, he became the finest fielder in the history of cricket. In 1923 and 1928 he was chosen to tour for the West Indies. His performance at Lord's brought him a contract to play for Nelson, Lancashire. In 1944 he won a historic court case against the Imperial Court Hotel for 'failing to receive and lodge' him on grounds of colour.
