A prominent political figure, John Scott was considered the greatest lawyer of his time. He developed trademark law by issuing numerous injunctions against merchants who sold goods bearing the name of other traders and also consolidated equity into a working body of legal principles. Scott was called to the Bar in 1776 and entered the House of Commons in 1783.
