Lawyer and courtier, Maitland was an important political figure at the court of James V I of Scotland (later James I of England), whose Lord Chancellor he became in 1588. He travelled with James to Denmark for the king's marriage to Anne of Denmark and on their return in 1590 was raised to the peerage as Lord Maitland of Thirlestane.
