Fenton won the Newdigate Prize for best poem while still studying as an undergraduate at Magdalen College, Oxford. While working as a journalist for the New Statesman, he published his first full poetry collection, Terminal Moraine(1972). With the prize money from his 1971 Eric Gregory Award, Fenton travelled to South East Asia as a freelance reporter.
