An MP from 1640, Marten was a staunch republican with a reputation for quick wit and licentiousness. He was an early advocate for the abolition of the monarchy, a prominent judge at Charles I's trial and a signatory of his death warrant. Although a central figure in the Commonwealth government, he became a bitter opponent of Cromwell's Protectorate. At the Restoration he surrendered himself as a regicide.
