A philosopher at odds with the academic establishment, Ryle's The Concept of Mind (1949) attacked the 'official' Cartesian theory of the mind, addressing problems of definition and meaning in philosophical concepts. He became a key figure in establishing Oxford as an acclaimed centre of philosophy in the years following the War.
