after Unknown artist
One of the wealthiest men in England, and Lord Lieutenant of the counties of Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. As one of Elizabeth I's most trusted courtiers, Shrewsbury was made the custodian of Mary, Queen of Scots in 1569; she remained his charge for fourteen years, most of which were spent at Sheffield Castle. Acrimonious relations with his wife, the strong-willed 'Bess of Hardwick', led to rumours of an 'improper intimacy' between Shrewsbury and his prisoner.
