This unusual portrait is inscribed by Sala: 'The very image of me!' He is shown in the study of his new home at Brighton. His friend Lord Ronald Sutherland Gower recorded that 'Sala is enjoying a kind of apotheosis, for, surrounded as he is by fifteen thousand books and collections of all sorts, he seems to be supremely happy.' The house was Sala's final extravagance and, debt-ridden, he was forced to sell his library the following year; he died soon afterwards.
