In 1935 Duncan-Sandys was elected as a Conservative MP and married Diana Bailey, eldest daughter of Sir Winston Churchill. During World War II he saw active service until 1941 when he was involved in a serious car crash. He resumed his political career in the Coalition Government, amidst some claims of nepotism.
