Brought up by his aunt, Queen Adelaide, and a playmate of Queen Victoria and George, 2nd Duke of Cambridge, he joined the army in 1841. In the Crimea, he served with distinction at the Alma, Balaclava, Sebastopol, and Inkerman becoming aide-de-camp to Lord Raglan, June 1855, and participating in the attack on the Redan; served in a number of positions, including commander of forces in Ireland in later years.
