Pellew entered the Royal Navy in 1770. He made a number of voyages on several ships before commanding two ships at the Newfoundland station. During the 1793 war with France, he was captain of a ship, the Nymphe, and his success fighting in this war made his name as a gallant and courageous officer. Pellew was promoted to rear admiral in 1804 and was appointed commander-in-chief of the East Indies.
