Artist and author, known particularly for his affectionate, humorous illustrations; he enlivened classics by Trollope and Bunyan in addition to numerous children's books, of which he wrote a series himself starting in 1936 with Little Tim and the Brave Sea Captain. He served as an Official War Artist from 1940.
