Eldest son of the 3rd Earl of Harrington, he was better known throughout the Regency period as Lord Petersham as he did not succeed to the earldom until 1829. Tall and handsome in appearance, he was a popular character in society. Renowned as an eccentric, dandy, connoisseur of snuff and tea, he was also a liberal patron of the opera and theatre. He designed the Petersham overcoat.
