Apprenticed at the age of sixteen to Archibald Stewart, a London wine merchant. In 1754 he set up a partnership in the wine trade with a young merchant, Thomas Brown. The business was based at Craven Street, where Benjamin Franklin became his neighbour and friend. In 1762 Whitefoord became a member of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce, and was active in its proceedings for the remainder of his life.
