Born into an Anglo-German family in Hamburg, Brandt learnt photography in Vienna in the 1920s, spending three months in 1930 as an assistant to Man Ray. Brandt settled with his wife Eva in London in 1934. He published his first photographic impressions of the country, staged by friends and family, as The English at Home (1936).
