by Lady Ottoline Morrell

This snapshot was taken by Ottoline Morrell, the society hostess and patron of the arts. John began sketching her in 1908 and they soon became lovers. This photograph was taken once their affair had cooled and Dorelia's primacy in John's life had been affirmed. The couple are shown in the grounds of Hampton Court. John was bored during the visit, prompting Ottoline to record: 'I find few painters really have got the instinct for cultivation.'
