by W. Joseph Edwards, after John W. Dodge
Jackson was born in South Carolina and spent his early life in poverty. After an unsuccessful attempt in 1824, he was elected the seventh president of the United States in 1829. This was the first election in which electors were chosen directly by voters rather than state legislators. The political organisation Jackson built while in office was the basis for the modern Democratic Party. He was re-elected for a second term in 1832.
