Trained as a surgeon and entered the Army in 1795, he accompanied Sir James Henry Craig's expedition to the Cape of Good Hope that year, and became Garrison Surgeon of Cape Town on its capture by the British. He made several confidential missions in South Africa. In 1805, Somerville went with Craig's expedition to the Mediterranean that was part of operations against Napoleon.
