Seguier trained as an artist but devoted himself to connoisseurship and restoring pictures. He was unusually influential in providing help and advice to various collectors including George IV and Sir Robert Peel. The first superintendent of the British Institution, Seguier was responsible for its annual exhibitions of contemporary and Old Master paintings. In 1824, when the government purchased the collection which established the National Gallery, Seguier was appointed the Gallery's first keeper, a post he held until his death.
