This engraving was made after Thomas Woolner's portrait medallion. Woolner knew the Palgrave family through his intimate friendship with Palgrave's older brother, Francis Turner Palgrave. Woolner wrote to Francis in September 1865 that he had read Palgrave's Narrative of a Year's Journey through Central and Eastern Arabia and had 'for the last fortnight scarcely thought of anything else, I found it so absorbing'.
