Arabist and diplomat. The son of Sir Francis Palgrave, William Gifford Palgrave converted to Catholicism and became a Jesuit missionary in India and Syria. He narrowly escaped the massacre of Maronite Christians in 1861, travelled across Arabia in 1862-3 and published his observations. He left the Jesuit order in 1862 and served in various diplomatic posts. Often obliged to disguise himself on his travels, Palgrave evidently liked to see himself in Arabic dress.
