Originally trained as an architectural and topographical artist in the studio of C.W. Pugin; he exhibited in London at the Old Watercolour Society between 1837 and 1857. His interest in photography dates from the early 1850s, when he became renowned for his elaborate genre studies. He also made architectural and topographic views, including a series at Osborne for the Royal Family in 1859.
