William Crockford was the founder and proprietor of one of London's most famous gambling clubs. He began his career as a Fleet Street fishmonger with a sideline in bookmaking and small-scale swindles. In 1816 he bought a share in a gambling tavern in St James's but realising its limitations proceeded to open the exclusive and luxuriously appointed Crockford's Club on St James's Street in 1827.
