Arliss (born Andrews) began his acting career on the stage in the English provinces in 1886 and by 1900 he was playing in London's West End. He moved to America in 1901, where he lived and worked for the next twenty years. In 1911, Arliss played the title role in the hugely successful Disraeli, a play written for him by Louis Napoleon Parker.
