According to an old label formerly on the back of the portrait, the portrait was painted by Hogarth and depicts Walker as Captain Macheath in The Beggars Opera, and was presented to Walker on the occasion of his last benefit performance. However, the history of the portrait before 1928 is not known and the identification and attribution do not stand up to scrutiny.
