David Garrick was the most celebrated actor in eighteenth-century Britain. He rose to fame in the 1740s playing Shakespearean characters including Hamlet and Richard III, and went on to consciously associate himself with the playwright as a means of self-promotion, as evidenced by the playwright's portrait on Garrick's seal.
