Born in Edinburgh and educated at Edinburgh University, Stoddart was admitted to the faculty of advocates in 1833 but never practised. His passion for angling (which assumed a new importance in the 19th century) developed from a young age. He had great knowledge of the habits of fish and was expert at fly-fishing and fly-making.
