Raised in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Paulin studied at Hull University and Lincoln College, Oxford. His collections include A State of Justice, winner of a Somerset Maugham Award in 1977, The Strange Museum, which won the 1980 Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize; and the acclaimed Fivemiletown (1987). His poetry explores themes of Northern Irish Protestant identity and regional politics. He is a regular member of the panel on BBC TV's Newsnight Review.
