In 1631, Captain James sailed from Bristol to search for a north-west passage to Asia on behalf of the Bristol Society of Merchant Venturers. Pack ice prevented him from reaching further than 62 degrees north, but he and his crew over-wintered in Hudson Bay, sinking the boat to protect it from the ice. Returning safely, having lost only three men to accidents, James published a book about his experiences, which became a popular success.
