An academic, educationalist and politician, Blackstone has held numerous public offices. She was Minister of State for Education and Employment (1997-2001) and Minister of State for Arts (2001-3) in the Labour government. In the academic field, she has been Professor of Educational Administration at the Institute of Education (1978-83), Director of Education at ILEA (1983-7), Master of Birkbeck College (1987-97) and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Greenwich (2004-11).
