Determined from a young age, Billington-Greig was a suffragette and political theorist, who would become a historian and critic of the suffrage movement. At 17 she ran away from home in Lancashire to her uncles in Manchester and trained as a teacher. In 1904, after she joined the Women's Social and Political Union and Independent Labour Party, political activism would shape the rest of her life.
