The daughter of Fred Storey, a comedian and scene painter who had made a reputation as an 'eccentric dancer' at the Gaiety, Sylvia first appeared on stage at the age of six, in her father's production of Rip Van Winkle at Kennington. Twelve years later she was in the cast of The Havana Girls, also at the Gaiety, when she left to marry the 25 year-old 7th Earl Poulett in September 1908.
