Drummond was affectionately known as 'The General' for leading marches on horseback and wearing an officer's cap. Her application to become a postmistress was rejected on the grounds of her height, encouraging her involvement in politics and women's rights. In Manchester she joined the Independent Labour Party, working in local factories to experience the lives of female employees.
