William Grove was called to the Bar in 1835 and began working as a barrister. After his marriage in 1837, he embarked on an extended tour of Europe, during which time he pursued his scientific interests. He published a paper on a new type of electric battery construction that, on Faraday's insistance, he presented at the Royal Institution in 1840.
