Australian-born physicist; aged 22, Bragg made pioneering advances in the recently established field of X-ray diffraction through crystals, and with his father (Sir W. H. Bragg) was awarded the Nobel Prize (the youngest-ever recipient) in 1914. He succeeded Ernest Rutherford both as Professor of Physics at Manchester University (in 1919) and as Cavendish Professor of Physics at Cambridge (1938) and in 1947 established there the Medical Research Council laboratory of molecular biology.
