Gollancz studied at Oxford before joining the Officers Training Corps in the First World War. A liberal from an early age, he believed in the 'free spontaneous, self-directing development of the life and spirit in every human person'. In 1921 he joined Benn Brothers publishing firm and in 1927 started his own firm, introducing revolutionary methods.
