Educated at the Royal College of Music, Ronald was first Assistant Conductor at Covent Garden and then worked as accompanist for Dame Nellie Melba on a tour of Canada and the USA. He gained his first important symphonic post in 1905, when he was appointed Director of the Birmingham Promenade Concerts. Birmingham was a watershed for the conductor, and thereafter his progress was assured.
