Gertler knew Huxley and his wife Juliette well, being part of the same circle that gathered around Ottoline Morrell at Garsington Manor in the war years. They renewed their friendship in the 1920s in Hampstead. The relaxed feel of the work, unusual in Gertler's more formal portraits, may reflect this association. This portrait was painted in the same year as Gertler's portrait of Natalie Denny.
