A gold example of this medal was presented to Hooker on the occasion of his 80th birthday. It was a tribute from the Linnean Society of London in recognition of Hooker's services to science, as is inscribed on the reverse. The portrait served as the basis for a Wedgwood medallion. Subsequently, a very similar portrait was carved by the sculptor for Hooker's memorial in Westminster Abbey.
