This caricature was published on the sitter's triumphal reception on his arrival back in England after the defence of Ladysmith. Meux, then known as Lambton, commanded H.M.S. Powerful. He landed a naval brigade with improvised field-carriages for naval guns, which were crucial in reinforcing the defences of Ladysmith.
