Admiral and Arctic explorer; entered the navy, 1831, and first saw service in the Arctic in 1848; established a reputation for his long explorations by sledge and did much to perfect Arctic sledging. McClintock commanded the famous search for Sir John Franklin, 1857-59, which confirmed the loss of Franklin's 1845 expedition and which McClintock described in a widely read account; knighted, 1860, and served in various commands until his retirement in 1884.
