Born in King's Lynn, Norfolk, Dawber had a particular affinity with the countryside. He was a leading exponent of rural domestic architecture and his work is particularly associated with the Cotswolds. He was President of Royal Institute of British Architects (1925-7) and received the Royal Gold Medal for architecture (1928). He played a prominent role in establishing the Council for the Preservation of Rural England (now the Campaign to Protect Rural England) and served as its chairman.
