Inglefield entered the Navy at the age of fifteen. In 1852, he led an expedition to search for Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin, who had disappeared while attempting to navigate a section of the Northwest Passage. Inglefield commanded Lady Franklin's private steamer, Isabella. He did not find Franklin, but charted previously unexplored areas along the northern Canadian coastline.
