Macdonald was appointed minister to China in 1896, and leased land to form the New Territories of Hong Kong in 1898. In 1900 he commanded the defence of the foreign legations in Peking during the Boxer uprising. Macdonald was made the first Ambassador to Japan in 1905, in which post he remained until 1912.
